Amla and Ayurveda

“What is this?”
One of my overseas friends who visited my house showed the round shaped with greenish yellow fruit and asked the above question.
I replied him, “we call it as Amla or Indian gooseberry. Taste it with the mix of salt and chilli powder”.
He looked at me, had a piece of amla with that mix and said, “It has a sour taste but I like this”.
I remember the days when I was young. I used to drink water once I finished eating amla. Do you have such experience? Wow, it really tastes sweet!
Amla is so respected in Ayurveda. You will admit it once I explain about its benefits
.
Eating Amla with honey improves your eyesight and drinking amla juice makes one’s skin brighten.
When you apply amla with lemon juice on your scalp for 20 min and rinse off with water, you will get a shiny strengthen hair.
Amla has an excellent source of vitamin C and thus drinking its juice reduces premature gray hair, delays premature ageing signs like fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots.
It is good for digestion and a glass of amla juice has Vitamin C that is twenty times more than a glass of fresh orange juice.
I hope you understand why it is celebrated in the life of Ayurveda.  If you would like to get a natural glow look, then go for Amla!

Garlic – The magician

Why is garlic so very important in almost 80% of the dishes made all over the world? It wouldn't have made it to the top spot for no reason. It has a long history.

Garlic is well know for its antibacterial and antiviralproperties. As the name implies, it fights against bacterial, viral, fungal, yeast and worm infections. The biggest usage of garlic is in its capability of preventing food poisoning. But how does it do it? It does the job by killing deadly bacterias like E-Coli (the one we normally have in our toilet, toothbresh, etc), enteritidis, salmonella, etc. These bad bacterias are the main culprits in food poisoning. Another great, practical usage of garlic can be seen in skin infection treatments. Ringworms are easily treated with a chemical found exclusively in garlic.

Are you someone that catch cold every now and then? Do you have running nose every other day? Then Garlic must be your best friend. Regular intake of garlic in your meals reduces cold, throat infections, throat irritations, etc. Ask your physician about the power of garlic in curing Asthma. He/She will give you lecture for hours about. Garlic helps clear the lungs path magically.

Turmeric

I  remember an incident from my childhood. It was in a small village in Madurai. I was around 10 year old. It was holidays in grandparents home. We were a group of 8 kids from the street playing under a mango tree. When one of our friends fell from the tree, he landed on sharp edged stone. His right legknee was hit and started bleeding heavily. We were all panicked and didn’t know what to do. We carried him to my home and reported to my grandma. She saw him bleeding and then gave him first aid. Cleaned the wound with fresh water and wrapped a white cloth around the wound. She said he would be alright. One full day went and the next day, the wound was bigger and it looked like some third party particles went in his wound and that caused the wound to septic. As we were brought up in cities like chennai, we were used to going to doctor for everything. As I was expecting my grandma to take him to hospital, she did something else. Ever so calm, she opened the home made bandage and cleaned the wound again. She applied a yellow cream all over the wound. Then left the wound in open. I was wondering what was she doing. After 12 hours, in the evening, we were in for a surprise. His wound was almost gone. The cut was closed. The puss around the wound was vanished. And he seemed very much normal. What was the magic.. it was the turmeric, revealed my granny. Turmeric worked the magic on his wound. Its antibacterial formula worked tremendously on the wound and cured it. This is one of the many incidents in my life involving the super medicine, turmeric.

Panacea

Everything that we see in this universe has both good (guna) and bad (dosha) properties. These properties are present at a particular ratio depending on the substance. Though rational thinking might warrant us to assume that it would be good just to have Guna's, a mutual existence is quintessential. As both Guna's and Dosha's are present in every substance, we might need to add substance that can counter its effects. This mixture should be done through careful selection.
Tulsi(basil) is a gift from nature. We grow Tulsi by sowing seeds and nurturing it. It does grow by itself by the law of nature. This is called Krishtapachyam and Aakrishtapachyam respectively. It supports life as a medicine for humans, home and food for other tiny creatures. Tulsi has great healing effects and each of its parts such as leaves, flower, stem or root has its own medicinal value. Guna's are the most in its leaves and less in its stem or root.
Tulsi can be further classified into Vana or Kattu Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum), Karum or Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, Holy basil) and White or Shukla tulsi.
The leaves of white tulsi is much broader when compare to the others. Since the leaves are broader, cleaning of its leaves must be done carefully. It is sour and bitter in taste. Its amazing properties are good for heart, but it increases pitta and hence can cause burning sensations. White Tulsi can help reduce/cure skin diseases, renal diseases, leprosy, blood pressure, phlegm congestions. This is widely found in temperate regions.
Both Krishna and White tulsi have almost the same medicinal properties; Krishna tulsi is more frequently used. It can help reduce chest congestion due to phlegm, can help reduce arthritis, can serve as a germicide and can reduce bad odours. It can help reduce effects of tuberculosis, asthma, sporadic fever, and mild food poisoning.
For fungal skin infections, apply krishna tulsi extract along with some salt.
For congestion in kids, mix gastric tablets along with Krishna tulsi.
Due to its amazing healing and balancing properties, tulsi can be used alongside other herbs. Tulsi can be used as a balancer to maintain vata, pita and kapha equilibrium in human body. Tulsi remains to be the most used herb due to its amazing medicinal properties.
