Everything that we see in this universe has both
good (guna) and bad (dosha) properties. These properties are present at a
particular ratio depending on the substance. Though rational thinking might
warrant us to assume that it would be good just to have Guna's, a mutual
existence is quintessential. As both Guna's and Dosha's are present in every
substance, we might need to add substance that can counter its effects. This
mixture should be done through careful selection.
Tulsi(basil) is a gift from nature. We grow Tulsi by
sowing seeds and nurturing it. It does grow by itself by the law of nature.
This is called Krishtapachyam and Aakrishtapachyam respectively. It supports
life as a medicine for humans, home and food for other tiny creatures. Tulsi
has great healing effects and each of its parts such as leaves, flower, stem or
root has its own medicinal value. Guna's are the most in its leaves and less in
its stem or root.
Tulsi can be further classified into Vana or Kattu
Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum), Karum or Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, Holy basil)
and White or Shukla tulsi.
The leaves of white tulsi is much broader when
compare to the others. Since the leaves are broader, cleaning of its leaves
must be done carefully. It is sour and bitter in taste. Its amazing properties
are good for heart, but it increases pitta and hence can cause burning
sensations. White Tulsi can help reduce/cure skin diseases, renal diseases,
leprosy, blood pressure, phlegm congestions. This is widely found in temperate
regions.
Both Krishna and White tulsi have almost the same
medicinal properties; Krishna tulsi is more frequently used. It can help reduce
chest congestion due to phlegm, can help reduce arthritis, can serve as a
germicide and can reduce bad odours. It can help reduce effects of
tuberculosis, asthma, sporadic fever, and mild food poisoning.
For fungal skin infections, apply krishna tulsi
extract along with some salt.
For congestion in kids, mix gastric tablets along
with Krishna tulsi.
Due to its amazing healing and balancing properties,
tulsi can be used alongside other herbs. Tulsi can be used as a balancer to
maintain vata, pita and kapha equilibrium in human body. Tulsi remains to be
the most used herb due to its amazing medicinal properties.
